April 29Arbor Day Celebration Arbor Day ceremonies to honor Jim Smith Arbor Day Ceremonies are planned for Friday, April 29 at 6:00 p.m. at the Pool Park. The Bayard Tree Board will be recognizing Jim Smith to recognize all his work with the Bayard youth and area sports fields. A tree will be planted in his honor. The fourth grade classes and the Boy Scouts will also be a part of the program. In addition, a permanent memorial will be unveiled to the public. Arbor Day was officially established by Governor Robert W. Furnas on March 12, 1874 and the day was observed on April 10. The idea of Arbor Day originated with J. Sterling Morton, a native of Detroit, who moved to Nebraska Territory in 1854 and quickly established trees and shrubs at his home. In 1872, a tree planting day, “Arbor Day” was proposed by Morton at a meeting of the State Board of Agriculture. It has been estimated that more than a million trees were planted in Nebraska that year. The public is invited to attend the ceremony.Read On...
